My Best Friend's
Birthday is a partially lost black-and-white amateur film written by Craig Hamann and Quentin Tarantino and directed by
Quentin Tarantino, while he was working at the now shuttered Video Archives in Manhattan Beach, California. The project
started in 1984, when Hamann wrote a short 30-40 page script about a young man who continually tries to do something
nice for his friend's birthday, only to have his efforts backfire.


Tarantino became attached to the
project as co-writer and director, and he and Hamann expanded the short script into an 80 page script. On an estimated
budget of $5,000, they shot the film on 16mm over the course of the next four years. Hamann and Tarantino starred in the
film, along with several video store and acting class buddies, and worked on the crew, which included fellow Video
Archives employees Rand Vossler and Roger Avary. It is the most overtly comedic film that Tarantino has made. In an
interview with Charlie Rose (available on the Region 1, Collector's Edition DVD of Pulp Fiction), he referred to it as a
"Martin and Lewis kind of thing."
The original cut was about 70 minutes long but due to a fire only 36 minutes of
the film survived. The 36 minute cut has been shown at several film festivals. It has never been officially released.
Several actors in this film later appeared in Tarantino's other films Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, and Kill Bill.
Tarantino has referred to this film as his "film school". Although the film was by his own admission very poorly
directed, the experience gained from the film helped him in directing future films.

Friend’s Birthday ed è l’opera prima di Quentin Tarantino. Il film, scritto e diretto dal famoso
regista, non è mai uscito nelle sale. L’opera risale al 1987 ed è incompleta, o meglio, il film fu
realizzato per la sua intera durata (circa 70 minuti), ma a causa di un incidente nella fase di sviluppo della pellicola
la seconda parte del filmato andò distrutta per sempre.

Del film restano intatti i primi 36 minuti,
recuperati e diffusi dal sito Collider: il filmato è in bianco e nero, girato in 16 mm con un budget decisamente
basso. Le location utilizzate furono vecchi bar abbandonati e la casa della madre del regista, il quale, al tempo,
lavorava nel videonoleggio Video Archives, i cui dipendenti finanziarono il progetto raccogliendo circa 6.000 dollari e
si improvvisarono membri del cast e della troupe.

La sceneggiatura di My Best Friend’s Birthday fu
scritta a quattro mani da Tarantino e da Craig Hamann, suo collega di lavoro e protagonista del film. L’idea del
film nacque dalle esperienze autobiografiche di Hamann nel 1984, ma la realizzazione occupò tre anni, causa
impedimenti di varia natura.

Il film racconta le vicende di Mickey Burnett (Craig Hamann) che, il giorno del
suo compleanno, perde il lavoro e la ragazza. Clarence (Tarantino), il suo migliore amico, cerca di organizzargli un
party per sollevargli il morale e ingaggia una squillo in affitto, Mysty.
Non tutto va come previsto… Si
genera infatti una serie di imprevisti e incomprensioni a catena fra i vari personaggi, che si troveranno in situazioni
alquanto surreali.

Nel film possiamo notare elementi chiave che ritroveremo nei progetti successivi del
regista. Solo per citare qualche esempio: la sequenza in cui Clarence parla con Mysty (verso la fine del filmato)
ricorda molto una scena di Pulp Fiction con protagonisti Vincent Vega (il cui stile è molto somigliante a quello di
Clarence) e Mia Wallace. Non solo scene ma anche nomi e situazioni verranno riproposti nei film successivi, ad esempio
radio K-Billy è anche il nome dell’emittente che ascoltano i personaggi de Le Iene. Molti degli attori
presenti in questo corto tra cui Linda Kaye e Rich Turner saranno poi comparse in Le Iene, Pulp Fiction e Kill Bill.

La sceneggiatura di My Best Friend’s Birthday sarà ispirerà Tarantino per la scrittura di Una vita
al massimo, film del 1993 diretto da Tony Scott e interpretato fra gli altri da Christian Slater, Brad Pitt e Patricia
Arquette.
